Black & White: But In Color

Artist StatementThis series of photos came directly out of one of the challenges in The ArtStudio PhotoClub, a weekly workshop that I have been facilitating. The challenge was to take a series of photographs using only black and white subjects, but using the color settings on the camera. I did my assignment at the last minute on the Saturday morning it was due. I think that's why I got the photos I did, because it was just a spontaneous 'do it' kind of response to the challenge. I knew that I wanted to do something with my black scarf and I knew that I wanted to do something with the linen shirt, so I just grabbed them and hung them in the window. I like working with natural light and it was a very grey morning. It didn't occur to me that having the subject lit from the back might make all the difference in the quality of the photographs. But it was the only available light source in the house at that hour of the day. Series began in late 2008.
